High Capacity Data
Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a High Capacity Data Solution?
An Ethernet connection that is a 2 Mbps or greater burstable bandwidth Ethernet/Internet service that is delivered via fiber optic and 10/100 Ethernet cable, terminates on the router at the customer premise, and having static IP addresses and six e-mail accounts.

2. What is Ethernet?
Ethernet is a type of local area network, a way of connecting computers, printers, terminals, and/or servers. It operates over twisted wire, coaxial cable, and fiber.

3. What would be considered burstable data traffic?
Burstable data traffic would mean that information is not being sent constantly 24x7.

4. What is an IP address?
An IP address is to the Internet what your home address is to the US postal service; assigned typically to your router.

5. What is a router used for?
A router is a piece of hardware that connects an internal LAN (local area network) to the Internet.

6. What is a LAN (local area network)?
A local area network consists of computers, printers, and other devices connected together on one network.

7. What is bandwidth?
Bandwidth is the capacity for transmitting data over a communications network.

8. What is bps (bits per second)?
Measure of the speed of a data communication.

9. What is Mbps (megabits per second)?
A measurement indicating that one million bits of information travel a certain distance in one second.

10. What is a 10/100 Ethernet?
A network having either 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps on the port.

11. What is a port?
The physical interface between a device and a circuit.

12. What is a circuit?
A physical connection of channels, conductors, and equipment between two given points over which an electrical current can be established.

13. What could I compare this to?
It is about 15 times the speed of a cable modem.

14. What are fiber optic cables?
Cables made from pure glass.

15. What are the advantages of fiber over copper cable?
Fiber carries much more information over a longer distance without loss of a signal.

16. What is SONET (Synchronized Optical Network)?
A self healing network using fiber optic cable for transmitting data and telecommunications.

17. What happens if an accident occurs and there is a break in the fiber?
SONET technology is installed on our network to cause the data to be redirected (redundancy) to an alternate route if the fiber breaks.

18. What type of extra equipment is necessary to install?
Our Ethernet data product will plug directly into your router!

19. When would you need a High Capacity Data Solution?
      a) If you have 10 or more users.
      b) If you send CAD (computer aided design) files or other large files.
      c) If you are running an FTP, World Wide Web server.
If your current high-speed connection is too slow.

20. How will this help my business?
a) More efficient, saves you money.
b) No extra equipment, connection plugs directly into your router.

21. How long would it take before the High Capacity connection is installed?
Typically it is between 3 to 6 weeks.

22. What does this cost?
Pricing starts at $700.00 for a 36 month contract; first 2 Mbps connection - $450.00 for additional 2 Mbps bandwidth.
